If you buy a crib from Walmart does that give you a free pass to build it while drinking a beer?

After my panic post, some oscar worthy crying and some emotional shoe shopping, B realized it was time to take a big step in the world of Plankton parents. We did what any American family does and get on the internet and order a crib. From Walmart.  YOU DON’T EVEN HAVE TO SAY IT. I KNOW.

Here’s the thing: I trust internet strangers a stupid amount. Like if you have a cool blog and look pretty and clean and know what you’re talking about, I’ll trust you more than my bank. DON’T TELL B THAT. And Young House Love is one such blog where I get lots of house/design/decorating advice. And by “advice” I mean I copy what they do and take the credit for myself. So the fine couple who run that fine blog got this crib, well a very similar one (that was sold out because I’m not the only one trusting internet strangers). They are super into the earth and environment and being chemical free and riding to work on ponies like I am. Well, like I try to be and maybe was for 10 days when Oprah told me about the trash circle in the ocean and I cried about the sick baby seals. But then I kind of forgot. Whatever. So when these bloggers showed me their research and their reasonings and their budget, I said yes please, sign me up for a Walmart crib. I’m an American Asian after all. Kind of.

And here it is. And here is B building it. And here is B building it with a beer even though I told him that it’s not ok to build your child’s sleeping place while drinking a beer. Then I remembered that I ordered a crib from Walmart and who am I to speak?

The savvy reader will notice the dresser was also a blatant YHL copy as well. I can't help it.

Pray those screws were righty tighty

After a solid 8 minutes of sweat and tears. A crib was built.

This is what Walmart and a beer get you.

Stay tuned for more details about the nursery going forward. I do have a plan. And those curtains are not part of it. I mean come on, I always have SOME sort of plan. And it usually involves glitter. B told me no on the glitter though. So that set me back.

But B did not say no to hearts and MOD PODGE. So I made Planky a craft right quick. Whenever I hear this Green Day song I think of Plankton. I usually cry. He usually kicks. I choke and cry more. It’s a whole thing and I’d love to be the person in the car next to me watching this scene.  BUT I’M STILL AN AWESOME PUNK ROCK BITCH AND I COMPLETELY BLAME HORMONES BECAUSE PUNK ROCKERS DON’T CRY THANK YOU.

I made Plankton a craft.

That’s Plankton’s lullabye. (tear)

We’re excited for him to be here. Although B is worried about his other baby.

CHARLIE LOVE

MAN this was a mushy post. I’m going to go vomit  up my Activia now.

Have a farty day.

You are awesome! I loved this post! But I really must quit reading you at work because people are begining to think that I am a little off, why else would someone set in their cube and laugh out loud for no reason! It’s not like the stuff we are doing is super fun! – Trust me its not! LOL

It only took 8 minutes to build the crib?!! Dang!

Cute crib! Sweet lullabye!

Have a great day, Amanda! :) Always enjoy reading your blog!

Crib looks fab! No Walmart here in Oz though! Another great buy is the IKEA high chair! cheap, funky and no crevisis for mashed banana to get into! Also if plankton should have an escape out of his nappy you can go hose it down instead of crying about how you spent uber dollars on a high chair for it to be pooed on!!!

MODG August 25, 2010 at 1:05 pm

Thanks Amanda. I am totally getting that Ikea chair. Mostly because your name is Amanda

I also have the IKEA high chair and it looks BRAND new after two children…so easy to clean.

We totally got our baby furniture from Walmart. Still love it and it’s never been recalled!

I am shocked that you bought a crib at Wal-mart. Okay I am over it. I would have guessed you are a pottery barn kids mom.

PB kids is a little too martha stewart on the farm for me. Although Walmart is a little too cow tipping on the farm for me so what do I know

The crib looks fab! Since those curtains aren’t part of the plan I think you should send them to me; or at least tell me where you got them. I saw then in another post of yours and have been secretly searching for them to copy you. I’m obsessed with finding them.

If it makes you feel better my husband and his friend put together bunk beds while drinking beer. Yeah, bunk beds. Where my six year old sleeps on top. About 5 1/2 feet off the ground.

Amanda August 25, 2010 at 9:57 am

Cribs are deceptively easy to put together. It’s like, let me screw these 4 sides on with a tool that came WITH and then put my baby in it to sleep. I guess they have to make it super easy for all the dumb people who have babies. My doctor told me just yesterday that during pregnancy it’s like you have “a bladder behind your eyes”. So you’re basically peeing tears 24/7.

8 minutes- to finish the crib and beer! watchout- I think that’s a new world record. We got our crib from Walmart- and here we are 7 months later- and Kash has never even slept in it- in fact he’s never even slept in his room yet….. *sigh* whatever- My luck- by the time we are ready to move him upstairs to his own room- I’ll have to turn that crib into the toddler bed-

I am totally with you on trusting Young House Love. Why do the nitty gritty research on these things when they do it for you–

and did it totally make your day that Sherri of YHL fame just commented on YOUR blog?

Aww that is so sweet! I am dreading having to put together our crib this fall…I just bought and devoured the book Baby Bargains which I highly recommend–(although if you’ve bought any baby stuff before consulting the reviews, it may leave you feeling like you either overspent or just bought an overpriced safety hazard for your kid) http://www.windsorpeak.com/babybargains/default.html

I love that dresser. Where did you find one that looks exactly like theirs?

Reply

MODG August 25, 2010 at 1:07 pm

Craigslist combined with some serious B elbow grease and some serious whining from me

Reply

Katie August 25, 2010 at 12:48 pm

Um…B looks like a giant in that “finished product” picture.

And i’m a huge YHL fan…so awesome…i’m have tempted to have them mood board me a room :)

And beer is fine…if you were in Kentucky it would be better.

Well, I hate to tell you this, but he still doesn’t look like a “beer and Wal-Mart” kind of guy! Way classier than your average Wal-Mart beer-guzzler!

Reply

Vicki August 25, 2010 at 1:44 pm

At first I thought it was you that was drinking the beer, which was really deliciously trashy for me, and then it was revealed that it was B which made the blog post not so much “Wal-Mart Derelicte” but “Awww Future Daddy”.

Building furniture of any kind requires alcohol in my book. And making crafts for that matter!

I too plan to copy YHL and I’m furious that the crib is out of stock. I check a billion times a day to see if they have more. *tear*

Ok I must admit. Sometimes when I’m reading and then a picture comes along I get distracted and jump down and look at the picture before I’m done reading. Anyway, I saw the dresser and in my head went “YHL YHL! they did that there too. Is there some sort of brown dresser on the bottom, white on the top thing going on across the country that I don’t know about?!? Crap, I just bought a bunch of all brown stuff and I will paint the top white tomorrow.” Then I kept reading. And it all made sense. PS. I cannot believe Sherry commented on here. Jealous to the maximum.

aw that lullaby is precious. and 8 minutes to build a crib? i feel like that’s gotta be some sort of record or something, haha.

Amy August 25, 2010 at 7:43 pm

I love that crib. It looks like those super pricey ones they sell in boutique stores for like 10,000 bucks. Beer and crib building always go together.

Shannon August 26, 2010 at 7:00 am

Ahhh duh. Crib + Man = beer-run. Totally understandable if not required.

We bought our crib from Wal-Mart too! We actually saw the same crib at Buy Buy Baby for twice the price so figured the WM one was safe.

Have you bought the book Baby Bargains yet? I reccomend you do before you register. It really saved our sanity and I dragged that damn book everywhere with me in my last trimester.

I love the crib!!!

My baby’s crib came from Wal-Mart as well, and her dresser came from Target, and side table/dresser came from Ross. I figured, the crib will be used for the first 2 years of her life and then I have to get her a new bed, so I decided to go cheap on the crib, but not to cheap. After all, strollers and car seats are costly, and I didn’t want to go cheap on those. Luckily, we got our stroller as a gift and I bought a jogging stroller off craigslist. They’re a lot better on dirt trails.

I can’t wait to see the rest of the nursery. I love the dresser!

Dear MODG,

My husband, P, thinks you and I are the same person already (after your dramatic gardening experience), so I won’t show him this post which brings to light the following:
- I, too, trust YHL more than a little, meaning we bought TWO of the Walmart cribs they got, for our twins coming in December
- I, too, stalked a similar dresser on Craigslist, but we haven’t even touched it yet – boo for not being motivated – not very YHL-ish :(
- I have the same Ikea curtains as you (although they will also not be in the nursery)

So yeah, I’m happy to read your blog, because it makes me feel more normal/less mean/more sparkly!

Shaina August 26, 2010 at 9:52 pm

I looove the crib! It’s totally neat and modern and cool and stuff. For some reason I do not read this fancy YHL blog, but you better believe I am looking it up RIGHT NOW.

Can’t wait to see how you do the rest of the nursery!!!

I think it’s actually #1 on the instructions

Remove beer (cold) from fridge and open.

down half the contents

Remove screws from packet…

Well, that’s the way I do it anyway…
